Themed caches are caches that have an unusual requirement or suggestion such as the "Ladies First" cache in Ottawa, which required the first 50 finders to either be a girl or be dressed like one.

In 2007, Geocaching.com published revised Cache Listing Requirements/Guidelines. Themed caches with mandatory requirements should be listed as mystery/puzzle caches, not as traditional caches
