As of July 2010, the site hosts more than 1 million active caches, and has more than 4 million registered users. The site also provides a tutorial for getting started, instructions on finding geocaches, and information about benchmark hunting, trackables, events, etc.

Access to geocache coordinates is restricted to registered members. Basic membership is free, and requires only a name and a valid email address. Premium membership requires an annual or quarterly fee, and provides access to additional features like pocket queries, bookmark lists, enhanced filtering with Google Maps, and instant notifications of newly published caches. is operated by Groundspeak, a company founded in September 2000 by Jeremy Irish, Elias Alvord, and Bryan Roth.
