An EarthCache™ is a form of virtual cache. An EarthCache must be educational, teaching something about earth science as it relates to an area of geological interest. The logging requirements of an EarthCache must involve the visitor in an educational task of some sort, and must require more than mere proof that the visitor found the location. Also, new EarthCaches must be approved in advance by The Geological Society of America. For more information about EarthCaches, visit EarthCache.org.

In 2005, Geocaching.com stopped registering new virtual caches (including EarthCaches), although existing virtual caches were grandfathered. New virtual caches had to be registered as waymarks at Waymarking.com. However, in 2006, Geocaching.com started registering new EarthCaches again (but no other new virtual caches).

Geocachers who log a find for an EarthCache receive an EarthCache icon.
