There are many different types of containers used to create geocaches. These containers can be categorized into four different groups, depending on the cache size: Micro, Small, Regular and Large.

==Micro Containers==
There are many different types of micro containers used in hiding a cache, some of these include:
*Film cans
*Bison Tubes
*Magnetic Hide-A-Keys
*Altoids tins (note that these have a nasty habit of leaking)
*Pill bottles
*Pill vials & holders
*Tic-Tac containers
*Breath-strips containers
*Magnetic strips
*Match holders

Cache containers that are not quite a micro container, nor as large as a regular sized container, are categorized as a small cache. Some small containers include:
*Small Tupperware containers
*Military decon containers
*Small Lock-n-Lock containers
*Small Rubbermaid containers(Seal-n-saver is best)
*Small peanut butter jars
*Others....

==Regular Containers==
Regular containers are containers that are large enough to hold a logbook and still have plenty of room left over for trade items. Some examples of regular sized cache containers are:

These containers are quite prone to leaking when they are cooled down in the winter, and then thawed out, creating a vacuum which sucks water into the pipe. Also, these containers resemble pipe bombs, and may create quite a disturbance if discovered by a [[muggle]]

===Leak Prone containers===
There are some containers that just will not keep the water out. Some of these are:
*Altoids tins
*Tic-tac or Listerine containers

===Glass containers===
You should not hide anything in a glass container. Glass containers can crack or shatter if they get frozen, dropped or stepped on. The broken glass is then potentially dangerous to animals and cachers.

===Food containers===
Food containers smell like food, and critters will nibble on or otherwise disturb them. Even if you wash them really well, they still smell like food to animals.

These containers are dry, rugged, cache containers from heaven. They have been known to survive floods, fires, tornadoes and everything else Mother Nature can seem to throw at them. They come in lots of different sizes to suit your caching needs.

CacheMate comes with an external program for converting your gpx files ([[pocket queries]] use this format) into a format that can be uploaded to your palm. It is called cmconvert and is very simple to use. After you run cmconvert, you merely sync your palm device using the software that came with it, and then run CacheMate on the palm when that is done. CacheMate will detect the new cache information and merge it into the database on your Palm device.

Although that might sound complicated, the entire process is very simple to do, here is an example as an action list:
*Open up your email program, notice that you have new pocket queries waiting for you.
*Double click on the pocket query file, this causes cmconvert to open, showing you the caches in that query.
*Press the export button on cmconvert. It will think for a while, then tell you it is done.
*Place your palm device in the cradle that it came with, press the hotsync button on the cradle.
*You are done. The next time you try to use cachemate, it will merge in the new data.

====Finding a cache entry====
There are a few ways to find a cache entry in the cachemate program.
*The main screen in cachemate is a listing of all caches you have in the database. You may scroll up or down to find the cache you are looking for, and then tap on it to bring it up. Alternately, you can write the first letter of the cache name to jump to that letter in the list.
*All palm-based devices come with a search feature. It is usually accessible through a button that looks like a magnifying glass. CacheMate was designed to be compatible with the search feature, so you can use this to search on waypoints or names of caches.
====Finding the nearest caches====
CacheMate has the ability to show you the geocaches nearest to any point. Ground zero for your search can be any of these:
*Your current GPS coordinates (if your palm device is connected to a gps)
*Any waypoint you have defined within CacheMate
*Any geocache in your cachemate database
*Any coordinates you can type in

To access this feature, select '''"Nearest caches..."''' from the '''Search''' menu on the cache list screen, or from the '''Record''' menu on a cache screen. Here there will be a screen asking you where you want to start your search. A box for typing in coordinates is provided for you. If you would like to search from the cache or waypoint you were just looking at, this box is already filled with those coordinates, so just hit '''OK'''. Alternately, you can type your own coordinates in the box, or just a button that says '''From GPS''' if your gps is connected.

====Navigating to the cache====
Once you are looking at the cache entry that you would like to navigate to, actually doing it can be very different depending on if you have a gps connected or not. If your GPS is not connected to your palm device, you would just proceed as you normally would, except the palm screen has replaced the cache page.

'''However''', if you have a gps connected to the palm, you can use the cachemate nav plugin to navigate your way to the cache. CacheNav is a free Cachemate plugin that you can download from the CacheMate website listed above. It has a navigating arrow, and shows you up to four pieces of important info from this list:

Spammers have begun to attack this wiki. Go view some of the revisions to pages like the Main Page, or even the help page, you will see for yourself. As of right now I am employing a link blacklist on edits, if you try to make an edit that includes a link that matches the blacklist, your edit is denied. The blacklist I am using is available at [http://blacklist.chongqed.org/]. Nightly, a new copy of the list is downloaded to help protect us going forward. Hopefully this will help until the spammers get smarter.

Please be on the lookout for links hidden in pages. Most of the spammers are inserting the links in invisible divs at the bottom of the page s that we don't even notice them, but search engines still pick them up, which is what the spammers are hoping for. When editing a page, please make a habit of scrolling down to the bottom of the edit box before you save.

Members at [[Geocaching.com]] can download a file from their account page that will enable Google Earth to show where geocaches are, providing links to cache pages. Its also possible to download a track from a [[Travel Bug]] page, which lets you view a 'fly through' of the travel bug's journey.

Be warned that the KML files downloaded from geocaching.com are deliberately made inaccurate - cache locations may be shown many meters from where they actually are. Also, as you move the map around, the caches will change position. For this reason, it's hard to use the geocaching KML file to locate caches precisly.

It is also possible to open [[GPX]] and [[LOC]] files in Google Earth ("File" menu and "Open", or just drag and drop).

Cacheopedia got its start in May of 2005 when someone on the [[geocaching.com forums]] posted a warning to the community about the growing danger of [[methamphetamine]] labs being found more and more often in places that geocachers wanted to go. Someone suggested that there should be a place for geocachers can share such warnings and compare notes on ways to stay safe in the woods. When editing a page, a [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Logging-in|logged-in]] user has the option of flagging the edit as a "minor edit". This feature is important, because users can choose to ''hide'' minor edits in their view of the [[MediaWiki User's Guide: The Recent Changes page | Recent Changes page]], to keep the volume of edits down to a manageable level.

When to use this is somewhat a matter of personal preference. The rule of thumb is that an edit of a page that consists of spelling corrections, formatting, and minor rearranging of text should be flagged as a "minor edit". A major edit is basically something that makes the entry worth revisiting for somebody who wants to watch the article rather closely. So any "real" change, even if it is a single word, should be flagged as a "major edit".

The reason for not allowing a user who is not logged in to mark an edit as minor is that vandalism could then be marked as a minor edit, in which case it would stay unnoticed longer. This limitation is another reason to log in.

There are some items that shouldn't be in a public geocache for various reasons.

Animals are attracted to the scent of food and can destroy most common cache containers. Even heavy duty cache containers are no match for the largest of curious animals like bears. Food items can spoil causing someone to become sick if consumed. Some items can rupture ruining the rest of the cache. Most people will not consume a food item left in a cache, so why leave it?

:Under very special circumstances, this author finds it acceptible for the owner of a cache to leave certain food items in a cache. These items need to be long lasting and well packaged, "life boat" rations is good example. A survival-themed cache or a cache at the end of a hard hike are good examples of a cache that might an owner might leave food items. However, special precautions must be taken and the owner should accept that the cache could be destroyed by food seeking animals and there could be a back-lash from the community. Finders should thoroughly inspect any item before consumption. This, in no way, advocates leaving food items in any general cache.

Small knives and multi-tools are seen by many as a real stretch to be called a weapon or dangerous. However, in today's world where the only weapons used to perpetrate the worst terrorist disaster in US history was box cutters, one can understand the concerns. If you leave a pocket knife or a multi-tool be prepare for some backlash.

===Bottled water===
Depending on the climate bottled water may not be a good idea because if the bottle goes through several freeze and thaw cycles, the bottle may fail thus ruining the cache. Many places, however, bottled water will last perfectly well until traded out and consumed. Be aware though that some cachers will not consume anything removed from a cache. A well maintained and clean cache is more likely to be favorable to someone who might drink a bottle of water than one that is filthy and full of bugs. Just be aware of the caveats of leaving bottled water.

Finders should ''always'' thoroughly check a bottle before consumption.

It is not true that poison ivy can "get into your system", and spread throughout your body. What is actually happening is you have multiple exposure sites that are appearing at different rates, or there is still urushiol on your body or clothing that you are unknowingly spreading yourself. That is why it is important to wipe down the skin and wash the clothing that may have come into contact with the plant as soon as possible. Also, wounds and blisters that may occur during the rash do not carry urushiol, so people can't get it from coming in contact with the affected skin.

For those of us who want to use a cache listing service, it's a bit of work to find a cache.

First, find the cache you want online. Memorize or print out the description (or at least the important bits), read the hint, and commit it to memory (I used sticky notes for hints, actually). Go to the mapping website of your choice, and note any intersections or features the cache is nearby (such as creeks) or just print out a map. Once you get that done, it's time to find the cache.

Arriving at the site, you usually have no idea where access points for the cache are. You will have to look around a bit, then once you find a trail that looks promising, try to keep track of where you are on the map.

Once you think you are within 30 feet of the cache, start searching. Look in places appropriate for the cache container (You DID note the cache size, right?), and hope you find it. You may make mistakes as I did and find a water bottle only to discover it's filled with beer or urine. If, however, you find the cache, you should be proud of your accomplishment. Sometimes it will take multiple trips to find the cache, or sometimes you'll get lucky.

The cache density in some locations is so great that you can find caches not only without benefit of GPS, but also without benefit of a cache listing service. Stroll through just about any small city park, try to think where you might hide a cache, then keep an eye out as you pass through that area. Chances are good that, sooner or later, you will find some Tupperware or ammo box under the shrubs just off the path.

They allow you to search for caches with the features you want (less than 3.5 difficulty, caches I haven't found, kid friendly, etc.) within a certain area. You can get up to 500 caches in your email, and the file includes all the cache information (hints, owner, logs). The file is delivered in [[Wikipedia:GPX|GPX]] format.
